Wrestlers Reappear At SJS For Olavarri
|
| |
| The SJS wrestling team makes its first home appearance Saturday morning since Dec. 5. The occasion is the first
Martin Olavarri Memorial Open Tournament. Starting time is 10 am, Feb. 20. |
| |
| The Spartans competed in the Biola Invitational Tournament last Saturday. As a team they finished sixth among seven
participating teams, but as individuals fared well. |
| |
| Heavyweight Don Jackson pinned three opponents on his way to a second place finish, the highest place for the Spartans.
"That was Jackson's best performance of the season," commented coach Hugh Mumby. |
| |
| Ron Cabral captured a third in the 126 pound division and Terry Kerr did the same in the 150 division. Both wrestled
very well according to Mumby. |
| |
| Oscar Trevino also took a second place for the Spartans in freshman competition and battled into overtime before
he was beaten in the 134 pound weight class. |
| |
| Tim Kerr and Ron Wright each made it to the semi-final round but did not place in the final standings. |
| |
| Mumby hopes to make the tournament here Saturday morning an annual affair. "It is being sponsored by us and
the Bay Area Wrestling Officials Association. It will be open to both junior and the four year colleges. Anyone
can compete as long as they are in college. If it goes over well we would like to have it every year." |
