Coach Hugh Mumby's Spartan grapplers ran into whirlwinds of wrestling talent Friday night when they wound up on
the short end of 19-11 scores against San Diego State and UCLA.
Heavyweight Don Anderson was the only consistent bright spot for the SJS squad. In the San Diego match he pinned
Jack Whaley in 30 seconds of the second period. Against UCLA's Russ Banducci, Anderson required just over two minutes
to end the match. In the two victories, Anderson stretched his win string to four wins against one defeat.
In other bouts with San Diego, Spartan Mike Stone lost by a pin to John Zook in the 123-pound class. John Lim cored
a 5-3 win over SDS matman James Anderson. Art Beatty was edged 6-5 by Dennis Payne in the 137-pound category. Frank
Strause (147) lost to Jack Ross 5-4. In the 157 division, Spartan Cliff Olsen found a one-point advantage going
into the final period. Without meriting stalling penalties, Olsen cleverly kept Dale Kernes away from a takedown
and squeezed a 3-2 victory. Gary Scardina ran into trouble against Frank Brown and lost the 167-pound match 13-9.
San Diego's Ed Hoffman pinned Bill Harm (177).
The going against UCLA was just as rough. UCLA's Robert Janko pinned Mike Stone for five points in the 123 weight
division. Dave Hollinger (130) followed his team mate by taking a 7-0 match from John Lim. Art Beatty (137) finally
got things rolling for the Spartan cause by beating Francis Wilson 9-2. Carl Dommeyer kept things alive by shutting
out Jay Crenshaw 5-0. Cliff Olsen (157) ran into trouble against Bruin Don Matson and was defeated 5-1.
UCLA's Rahim Javanmard, AAWU champ at 167 last year, squared off against Gary Scardina and found him impossible
to pin. Although Javanmard knew all the tricks and showed himself to be a highly polished performer, he could not
hold on to Scardina and had to content himself with a 26-10 decision. Gary Scrivens (177) took the win from Spartan
Bill Harm when Harm was forced to leave the action because of a wrenched back. |
