Beatty, Miller Unbeaten In Matches

Led by Art Beatty and undefeated Loren Miller in the middle weights, the SJS wrestling team won four matches, lost one, and tied one during semester break.

The grapplers' only loss came to nationally ranked Oregon State which Spartan coach Hugh Mumby rated the best team on the west coast.

Mumby, who said his team did much better than he expected, remarked, "Loren Miller proved in the six matches that he is certainly one of the best wrestlers on the west coast, and is an Olympic prospect." Mumby was also pleased with Art Beatty who was undefeated in the six matches, and whose only loss this season was inflicted by a world ranking wrestler.

In the Spartans' 22-10 win over Chico State, the SJS winners were Beatty, Miller, Carl Dommeyer, Mike Herschfelt, Bill Harm, and Ray Lychak, who replaced injured Dan Barclay. Beatty and Lychak pinned their opponents.

SJS defeated Chico State 26-8, as only two Spartans lost matches. SJS winners were Roy Kusumoto, Richard Kaphengst, Beatty, Miller, Dommeyer, Herschfelt, and Dave Cole. Kaphengst, Miller, and Dommeyer pinned their opponents.

Oregon State defeated the Spartans 23-10, as Beatty, who pinned his opponent, and Miller were the only SJS winners. Kaphengst and his opponent had a draw match.

In the Spartans' tie match with UCLA, Beatty, Miller, Herschfelt, and Harm won their matches. Miller and Harm pinned their men.

SJS defeated the University of California at Santa Barbara 20-11. Kaphengst, Beatty, and Miller won their matches, and Roy Kusumoto had a draw match. Beatty and Miller pinned their opponents.

The Spartans defeated San Diego State 17-13. The SJS winners were Kaphengst, Beatty, Miller, and Dommeyer. No Spartan pinned his opponent.

The grapplers were given a special treat in practice Wednesday when Mumby wrestled most of the team members with only a few minutes rest in between matches.

SJS will play host to San Francisco State Monday, Feb. 22 at the Spartan Gym.
