A sparse gathering of fans witnessed some lively grappling Friday night as Stanford and State musclemen staged
an informal get-together in Spartan Pavilion.
Genial Gene Grattan, the man behind Spartan wrestling, used his freshmen against the Indians, giving the varsity
a rest before their barnstorming tour down south this week
Ten matches were run off during the evening and Grattan's yearling gave a fine account of themselves. Two of the
bouts featured exhibitions between local members Jack and Charley Smith resuming their friendly rivalry, and Joe
Reginato tangling with Si Simoni.
Henry Zook, Stanford representative in the 118-pound division, started the program with a one fall victory over
State's Fred Albright. However, in the second match Henry's brother, Clyde Zook, met defeat via the fall route
against Gail Stewart. Other winners include LaBerge of State who defeated Key, Steir of Stanford defeated Covello,
Yates of Stanford scored a fall against Stewart, Riddle defeated Larson, Haffner of Stanford won a decision over
Fritz, and Keusseff of the Indians won on a fall over Kallam.
This match was in no way a dual affair. It was strictly informal for the purpose of providing practice for the
contestants. Grattan's gang goes back to work this week in preparation for a trip down south to meet three colleges
over the weekend. |
