| In two of the most important meets of the year, the SJSU wrestlers beat UCLA 23-14, Friday, but lost to nationally
ranked Cal Poly-SLO 32-8, Saturday, before what coach T.J. Kerr called the largest crowd at a wrestling meet in
his 11 years at SJSU. |
| |
| Kerr called the UCLA match spectacular from a spectator's point of view. |
| |
| Marty Lockwood set the theme of the Spartans with a victory over Greg Davis in the 118-pound division. |
| |
| Lockwood was trailing 10-6 when he scored a takedown and nearly pinned his opponent with only six seconds left
in the match to score five points and win the decision. |
| |
| Robert McDowell, ranked sixth in the nation at 142 pounds, Kevin Hejnal (158), Duane Harris (190), Mike Snipes
(167), and Jim Rey (177) also won matches. |
| |
| Rey thrilled the crow of over 200 when he won his match after re-injuring a knee early in the first period. Scoring
his last three points on a cradle hold, which totally immobilizes an opponent, Rey registered a superior decision
which gave SJSU four team points. |
| |
| "We have a thing (on the team)," Rey said after the meet. "If you start (a match) you're going to
finish." |
| |
| UCLA coach Dave Auble said the Spartans showed a lot of class in their several come from behind wins. |
| |
| Against Cal Poly-SLO, the Spartans didn't fare as well. Their only victory came when McDowell pinned Glenn Cooper
one minute into the second period. The pin brought a crowd of nearly 400 to its feet. |
| |
| Kerr said the individual matches were closer than town years ago when Cal Poly-SLO, which is usually nationally
ranked and ranked 9th this year, beat the Spartans. |
| |
| Vaughn Hitchcock, coach of the Cal Poly team, said his wrestlers were more aggressive and more importantly, more
skillful. |
