The SJS wrestling team concludes its highly successful home season this week, meeting Oregon State Wednesday night
and taking on Chico State Friday night. Both matches start at 7:30.
Expected to battle for Spartan coach Hugh Mumby's crew are L.Q. Starling (115), Dick Hamm (130), Dan Swenson (137),
Gary Lorenz (145), Dave Allen (152), Gary Ramstetter (160), Mike Herschfelt (167), Paul Hatling (177), and Rich
Popejoy (hwt).
Mumby described Oregon State as a very tough opponent and indicated that his Spartans could have a rough time improving
their 9-2 season record against the Beavers.
Leading OSU grapplers this season have been heavyweight Mark Gartung, 177-pound Jeff Smith, Ron Iwaski and Lee
Sprange.
The Spartans were at Berkeley Friday to compete against the Nears and Western Washington in a triangular match,
but no results were available at press time.
The semester break saw the grapplers compile a 3-1 traveling record, beating San Francisco State, UC Santa Barbara,
and San Fernando Valley State, while losing only to UCLA.
The SJS freshmen grapplers, who have been idle since Jan. 13, also return to action this week, testing the Cal
frosh in a match today in Berkeley, and meeting West Valley College, in a 4:00 pm preliminary to the varsity, Oregon
State tussle Wednesday.
Expected to compete for the Spartan frosh are Greg Peterson (115), Art Hamada (123), Bob Bailey (130), Mark Peterson
(137), Ron Wright (152), Ralph Hider (160), and Phil Chan (167). |
