SJS Wrestlers Meet CP And Bruins This Week

Coach Ted Mumby will accompany ten SJS wrestlers on a two-day excursion to Southern California this week. The local matmen face Cal Poly at San Luis Obispo tomorrow night and the UCLA Bruins in Los Angeles Thursday afternoon.

Mumby said yesterday, "If we don't do better against our next two Southland opponents than we did against two previous 1951 Southern California foes, we will lose." He was referring to the San Diego Naval Training Center and San Diego State College squads, the only teams to top the Spartans this year.

The locals have seen no action since the 15-14 loss to SDS here Saturday, Feb. 3. The Aztecs trounced the Mustangs in Crandall Gym 24-3, but Mumby claims the farmers are not that bad.

Coach Sheldon Harden's Green and Gold mat crew boasts a 30-0 decision over San Francisco State. The Gators were pre-match favorites but failed to win a single match. In dropping a 20-6 affair to the San Diego Naval Training Center, Cal Poly wrestlers made most of their matches close.

Paul Fishbeck, who doubles as a boxer-wrestlers, is the Mustang standout. Another Cal Poly ace is Webber Lawson. He lost a close decision to Billy Almack (SDNTC) who was once the Oklahoma state champion 130-pound grappler.

The locals face Cal Poly at 8:00 tomorrow night, then travel to UCLA for a 3:00pm meeting on Thursday.

The UCLA mat crew is of unknown quality, but Harry Broadbent, SDS coach, describes the Bruins as "very strong". SJS defeated the Bruins 19-11 here last season.

Mumby describes his grapplers as being in good physical condition for the trip. The Raiders will be after their fourth and fifth victories of the season. They hold two lopsided wins over Stanford, and a 24-13 win over San Quentin.

Spartan grapplers accompanying Mumby on the Southland tour will include Chuck Matsumoto (115), Bennie Ichikawa (123), Jack Cassedy (130), Jack Jackson (137), Ray Bunnell or Bill Waldrup (147), co-captains Frank Waxham or Lee Jordan (157), Ralph Morrocco or Jordan (167), Lou Menghini (177), Al Cadena (191), and Jean Snyder (hwt).
