The Spartan wrestlers came to grips with the Stanford Indians last night and just slipped away with their scalps
by a 16-12 margin. It appeared that the Spartans would go all the way as they marched through the first four weight
divisions, but the Tribe came back to capture the final four matches.
Stone (123) pinned Stanford's George Musser in just over two minutes of the first period. Dommeyer (147) knocked
of the Indians' Gerry Smith by a fall after grabbing an early point lead. The other Spartan victories were tallied
by John Lim and Art Beatty. Lim shut out Tim Davis with an 8-0 decision, while Beatty followed up with a 9-5 score
over Gerry Smith.
The Braves then started down the victory trail when Phil Kendall took a close decision over Cliff Olson by 5-3.
Steve Schaum had little trouble with Gary Scardina. At the final whistle he had tallied up 14 points against Scardina's
3. Tom Allen followed suit with a 6-4 victory over San Jose's Bill Harm. However, late in the match he was warned
against stalling.
The final match, featuring San Jose State's previously undefeated Don Anderson and Stanford's Duncan Ross brought
the SRO crowd into a frenzy of excitement. Ross could not be denied, however, and handed Anderson a close 5-4 defeat.
According to coach Hugh Mumby, the Stanford grapplers have progressed greatly since last year. This year's victory
for SJS was the closest in years, yet the Indians have been unable to topple the Spartans in wrestling tourneys.
Mumby admitted that mistakes had been made and the score was indicative of the "real closeness of the match."
Friday, Feb. 14, the SJS matmen will face two opponents. At 2 pm, they are hosts to San Diego State, At 8 pm, they
square off against UCLA. Mumby terms both teams "real strong competition."
"We have two matches because UCLA will play Cal at the same time we play San Diego, so both teams should be
about in the same condition," he stated. |
