 Wrestlers Stopped By Flu Bug

by Dave Meltzer

Decimated by illness, the SJSU wrestling team suffered its worst loss of the season, 39-9, against powerful Cal State Bakersfield Friday.

Five key Spartans didn't make the trip to Bakersfield because of the flu.

126-pounder Eddie Baza, 142-pounder Dennis McDowell, 150-pounder Reggie Thompson, 167-pounder Dave Brouhard, and 177-pounder Ken Klein were all out of the line-up.

The Spartans were forced to forfeit both 167 and 177-pound weight classes because of the flu bug.

118-pounder Mike Rodrigues, defeated Tim Vanni, 10-6, in the opener.

Heavyweight Case Gulliford was responsible for the other win when he pinnned Tom van Arket in the finale at 3:41.

In between, the meet was all Cal State Bakersfield. The Roadrunner's three nationally ranked grapplers all came up with solid victories.

126-pounder Joe Gonzales, ranked first in the nation, defeated Waynes Jones 27-14.

134-pounder John Azevedo, also ranked first, pinned David Barnes in 6:13.

158-pounder Kevin Dugan, ranked fifth, stopped tough Adam Elias, 5-1.

The Spartans, now 17-4, took fourth place finish at the Biola tournament Saturday night.

Wayne Jones, wrestling at 118 pounds, was the lone SJSU individual champion. Jones pinned all three of his foes.
