Wrestlers To Face Foes In Southland
|
| |
San Jose State grapplers invade San Diego tonight to launch a three-day mat tour in the southland that will see
them trying for victories at San Diego Naval Training Center, San Diego State, and UCLA.
The SDNTC meet, at 8:00 tonight, will be a rematch for the Spartans. The middies sunk coach Hugh Mumby's squad,
20-13, here Jan. 13. The Raiders were able to salvage pins in the 157-pound and 177-pound classes and took a decision
in the 123-pound division.
For SJS, PCI champ Dick Francis will shift to the 167-pound weight from his usual 177-pound position because of
the absence from the lineup of Tom Stern who will once again have boxing duties. Gus Talbot will move into Francis'
regular spot for the Mumby-men.
The Raiders will be without representation in the heavyweights as Dick Fleeger and Jerry Ruse did not make the
trip.
Against SDS tomorrow night, the Spartans will go into unknown territory. The Aztecs have not been tested by Raider
wrestlers but the southerners are known to have a star in the 147-pound division, Joe Gigletto. Pete Herder of
the locals will oppose Gigletto.
UCLA match is a natural. Mumby will take his boys into the Westwood gym Saturday afternoon to face the powerful
Bruins. Only one man is a cinch to win. That's Jack Ellena, Bruin heavyweight contender, who placed fourth last
year in the NCAA wrestling finals. Ellena, star lineman on the UCLA football squad, will be unopposed.
The Raiders, who have been victorious four times and suffered four setbacks, will count on Kay Toyota, George Lao,
Ron Stingley, Utley, Francis, and Talbot. |
