"For our first tournament, we didn't do quite as well as i had expected, but we had some bad breaks which hurt us."

This is how SJS wrestling coach Hugh Mumby described his team's performance in the San Jose State Invitational Tournament held Saturday in the Spartan Gym.

The Spartans placed sixth out of 11 teams with three men placing in the top four in their weight divisions.

"I felt we had an outside chance of placing in the top four teams," Mumby stated, "but it didn't work out that way."

The SJS team accumulated a total of 22 points in the tourney, 72 behind Cal Poly's winning total of 94. Other totals were UC Berkeley 65, Chico State 51, Humboldt State 49, San Francisco State 35, Stanford 19, Sonoma State 16, UC Davis 10, Sacramento State 4, and University of Nevada 3.

Placing highest for the Spartans was Tim Kerr, who placed second in the 167-pound division. Also placing were Rudy Rodrigues, third in 126, and Dick Hamm, fourth in 134.

Mumby felt that "Kerr and Rodrigues did very well for us and Hamm came through with a good performance."

With a couple of breaks, the Spartans might have finished higher. Mumby cited two matches involving Terry Kerr and Jim Lucas which could have gone either way.

Heavyweight Bob Garcia would have placed, Mumby said, but he injured his knee during one of the matches.

First place finishers were Ray Hernandez (118) SFS, Bernie Olmos (126) UCB, Mike Wossomon (134) Cal Poly, Pete Medley (142) UCB, Jeff Fern (150) Humboldt State, Lee Torres (158) Cal Poly, Russ Day (167) Cal Poly, Denny Johnson (177) Cal Poly, and Ron Lucas (190) Cal Poly.
