The fifth annual Northern California Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournament will be held this Saturday, Dec. 9, in the Spartan Gym at 12 noon.

The 1961 edition of the Spartan grapplers under wrestling mentor Hugh Mumby will be the defending champions of the tournament.

Mumby expects 15 teams to be vying for the Cal title. Among the expected college teams to compete for the title are Chico, Davis, SFS, Stanford, Santa Clara, SJCC, Modesto JC, Fresno State, Fresno JC, Cabrillo, Reedley, College of Sequoia, and San Mateo College.

Representing SJS will be Dave Armstrong (123), Frank Paoni (130), Bob Lopez (137), Leroy Stewart (174), defending champion Cliff Olson (157), Fred Yrueta (167), Ron Ruscigno (177), Paul Hodgins (191), and George Hewitt (hwt).

Expected to give the Spartans trouble in retaining their championship will be the rugged delegations from Cal, Fresno JC, and Modesto JC.

Earlier this week the SJS freshmen downed the SJCC grapplers 16-12.

Roy Kusumoto (123), David Austin (137), Ismael Rodriguez (167), and Bob Young (hwt) garnered wins for the SJS team.

Losing on close decisions for the Spartan frosh were Carl Dommeyer, Art Beatty, James Doyal, and Tom Brooks.

Coach Hugh Mumby has a good chance to field another Northern Cal championship with runnerups from last year Yrueta and Lopez competing, not to mention the fine work of defending champion Stewart.
