It has long been a quiet contention of many San Joaquin Valley residents that their area produces athletes who
are just a little bit bigger and a little bit meaner than those from surrounding regions.
Glances at the record books reveal a sound foundation for such a belief and local wrestling fans can see for themselves
what the Valley has to offer when Fresno City College and Modesto JC send powerful delegations to Saturday's fourth
annual Northern California intercollegiate wrestling tournament in Spartan Gym.
Fresno, Modesto, and the University of California are pre-tourney favorites to run off with most of the awards.
Other teams in the running for the top team trophy will be Hugh Mumby's SJS Spartans, Stanford, San Francisco State,
California, Chico State, Cal Aggies, Santa Clara, and several other junior colleges.
Entries must be received in the wrestling office by this evening, according to Mumby, who is in charge of the tournament.
Fraternities and independent groups may enter any number of men in each weight division. All amateur wrestlers
who are carrying 12 or more units are also eligible to enter, Mumby said.
Colleges will enter any number of men in each of the eight weight divisions, but only one man can compete for team
score in a division.
Individual weight class winners will receive trophies, while plaques will be awarded to second and third place
finishers. |
