 Grapplers Grab 7th

SJS's young wrestling team is learning about the sport the hard way...against some of the top teams in the state.

At the SJS Invitational last Saturday, the youthful Spartans finished in a tie for 7th in the 12 team tourney, but gained valuable experience.

The meet itself was dominated by Cal Poly-SLO, a perennial college power. They only sent their second and third string teams to the invitational, but still finished ahead of second place California.

But Terry Kerr, new head coach, found some encouraging signs in the SJS effort.

"We were able to place Steve Baca with a second in the 126-pound weight class, and Tim Kerr (Terry's younger brother) took a fourth in the 167 category.

"In addition, we had a couple of others who came close to placing," Kerr said mentioning Dean Prescott, a freshman, and Jim Lucas, a sophomore.

Kerr also had praise for several other Spartans, including Jeff Norcup, Oscar Trevino, Mark Rodriguez, and Brad Anderson.

"It is tough for these young guys, who as freshmen and sophomores, are being thrown in against juniors and seniors," Kerr pointed out.

"Right now, we are concentrating in getting ourselves in shape for the conference finals. We do not want to peak too early, so all we really care about is winning the PCAA."

Tomorrow, the Spartan grapplers face another stern test in San Francisco State. The Gators finished third at the SJS tournament.

The meet starts at 7:30 pm upstairs in the SJS Men's Gym.
