San Jose State wrestlers will be up against six other colleges in an attempt to successfully defend the crown they
have held for over three years running in the 6th Annual Northern California Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournament
here tomorrow at 12 pm in the mat room.
Fresno State will be among the favorites to take the title away form the Spartans, according to coach Hugh Mumby.
Though SJS is not as strong this year, the Spartan team will be in contention.
Other teams entered in the meet are California, Santa Clara, Chico State, San Francisco State, and Stanford.
Last year 14 teams competed in the tourney, but the number has been reduced to seven teams this year.
The Spartans scored 68 points over runners-up Fresno State (53) and Modesto Junior College (39).
As a result of challenge matches yesterday and Wednesday, the Spartan lineup for both frosh and varsity teams has
been determined. The varsity team will be John Lim (123), Dave Armstrong (130), Carl Dommeyer (137), Warren King
(147), Cliff Olson (157), Ismael Rodriguez (167), Jack proctor (177), Paul Hodgins (191), and Don Anderson (hwt).
Hodgins took a third place in last year's meet. Anderson competed independently and captured first place in the
heavyweight class.
Mumby expects King, Olson, Rodriguez, Hodgins, and Anderson to do well this year.
The frosh team is composed of John Esparza (123), Rich Peffley (130), Bob Madsen (137), Gary Scardina (157), Rich
Lawhead (167), Con Hrapoff (177), John Cole (191), and Jim Porter (hwt). |
