 Wrestler Tackle SFS Gators Tonight

The Spartan wrestling team plays host to its second dual meet of the young season at Spartan Gym tonight at 7:30, but it will have a tough time duplicating its results of Last Friday.

In the opener against the University of Nevada, SJS won every weight division in dumping the invaders 39-0.

Saturday the SJS team finished third in the Northern California Invitational at Spartan Gym, behind defending champ Cal Poly-SLO and Fresno State.

Tonight's match versus San Francisco State, the Spartans' final home meet before christmas vacation, will be a tougher test.

SJS is favored to defeat the Gators, but SFS is certain of a better showing than the young Nevada squad.

SFS finished seventh in the festivities Saturday.

The weekend's activity showed that the Spartans will be a threat in any dual meet, but they suffered one bad break.

It now appears certain that Loren Miller may be lost for the season. Miller, who has competed in the NCAA championships for the past two seasons, has undergone several knee operations. He hasn't completely recovered from the injuries.

While that loss could be crucial to the Spartans, Gary Ramstetter filled in well during the weekend in the 160 pound class. He won Friday and finished third in the tournament.

Nevertheless, Miller had the potential to go through the season undefeated and his loss will be felt.

Rich Popejoy and Dan Swenson paced the Spartans Saturday with second place finishes. Four thirds and a fourth gave the Spartans enough points to hold third overall.

Swenson, wrestling at 137, and Popejoy, at 191, both reached the finals before they lost on decisions. Popejoy was defeated by only one point, 4-3.

Dick Hamm (130), Gary Lorenz (145), and Mike Herschfelt (167) gained thirds Saturday and L.Q. Starling added a fourth in the 115 pound class.

Cal Poly dominated the event so completely that it won all but two of the eleven weight classes.

Chico State ended fourth, Stanford was fifth, and UC Berkeley tied Santa Clara for ninth.

Friday, in their opening dual meet of the season, the Spartans ran over the inexperienced Nevada team.

Joe Silva (152), Herschfelt, and Popejoy (hwt) pinned their opponents.

Swenson, Lorenz, Ramstetter, and Paul Hatling (191), added decision triumphs and Larry Kubo (123) and Hamm won when their opponents failed to show.

This weekend the Spartans travel to the Mare Island Invitational for their second test in tournament competition. The two-day affair is SJS' last action until it meets strong Fresno State after the vacation.

The two meets last weekend indicated that the Spartans' balanced strength should make them a better dual meet club than tournament team.

While coach Hugh Mumby's squad has good strength in most of the weight classes, a team that has a few outstanding individuals would have a better chance in a tourney.

"Generally we have good strength, and it's spread out," Mumby said. "We should win at least 50 percent of our dual meets. But i scheduled the best teams on the West Coast, so our chances of going undefeated aren't good."
