The first home SJS wrestling match is scheduled for 4:00 pm in the Men's Physical Education Building. The Spartans
will meet the University of Nevada.
SJS will be trying to bounce back after a 33-5 shellacking handed them by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in their season
opener.
Cal Poly defeated the Spartans in every match except in the 191-pound class where Cleve Holt won by forfeit.
Said Spartan coach Hugh Mumby, "Cal Poly has a very strong team, in fact they are the defending NCAA champions
of the college division."
"We were not quite ready for them, partially because the season started earlier this year," he added.
Mumby said that the loss to Cal Poly should motivate his wrestlers to better efforts in the future.
The Spartans will go with nearly the same men in each weight class against Nevada that faced Cal Poly. Two weight
classes will be decided in practice matches this week. In the 152-pound class Ron Wright is fighting Steve McKeown
for the position, and in the 167-pound class it will be either Walt Thatcher or Dave Allen.
Scheduled to wrestle will be John Cunningham (123), Terry Kerr (130), and Paul Cunningham (137), all up from last
year's frosh.
Arno Dominguez, 145-pound transfer from Chabot, Gary Ramstetter (160), and Paul Hatling (177), both returning lettermen
from two years ago, Cleve Holt, 191 transfer from Foothill JC, and John Sheuford, heavyweight from West Valley,
round out the card.
The squad is made up of about 35 men according to Mumby and competition has been keen.
SJS will host the San Jose Invitational Saturday, beginning at 1:00 pm and continuing all day. Twelve schools including
Humboldt, Chico, Sacramento, Sonora, San Francisco, Fresno, and Hayward State colleges, plus UC Davis, University
of Nevada, Cal Poly, and St. Mary's will be participating.
Fresno State is the defending team and Cal Poly was second in last year's meet. Mumby believes that they will be
the two toughest teams again this year, along with San Francisco State. |
