Wrestlers Put Dual Meet Record On Line

The Spartan wrestlers put their unbroken string of dual meet wins over San Francisco State on the line tonight in the City at 7:30 in their initial dual meet this season.

If the Gators are going to break the jinx, this year would probably be their best chance. The loss of seven SJS varsity regulars has made this a "rebuilding season" according to Spartan coach Hugh Mumby.

"San Francisco is a lot stronger this year and we're a lot weaker and i'm not going to predict a victory," Mumby added. "And after all, they came in higher than us in the San Jose Invitational."

In that tournament, in which SJS took seventh place, SFS tied for fourth with Chico State. For SJS, Loren Miller (152) won in his division, heavyweight Joe Aquino finished second, and L.Q. Starling (115) garnered third.

The Gators appear to be strongest in the heavier weights as they placed four men high up in the tournament competition. Monty Muller (190) finished second, Jim Goddard (167) took third along with heavyweight Tom Powell, and Don Gwinn (177) took fourth.

All is not bleak on the SJS wrestling scene, however, as the freshmen turned in an "impressive performance" at the tournament, finishing second behind California.

The freshmen piled up 44 points with Al Morash and Paul Cunningham leading the way with victories in the 137-pound and 130-pound divisions.

John Cunningham wrestled to a second place finish in the 115-pound class while Terry Kerr (123) and Ron Wilson (177) earned third-place points. Don Cowan took fourth at 190 pounds.
