San Jose State's defending championship wrestling team will battle with seven opponents Saturday afternoon in the
7th annual Northern California Invitational Wrestling Tournament at San Jose State.
The defending titlists will encounter grapplers from Fresno State, Chico State, UC-Berkeley, UC-Davis, Santa Clara,
San Francisco State, and Stanford.
Fresno State's squad was a close runnerup to the SJS team in last year's tournament. The Fresno State Bulldogs
will be headed by 177-pound champ Don Nelson and Joe Rossi, 157-pound California Collegiate Athletic Association
champ.
PCI 123-pound titlist's Roy Stuckey dislocated an elbow and will miss the match.
Stuckey was one of Fresno's top wrestlers.
Leading the San Jose Spartan squad will be eight lettermen. The Spartan team and the seven other squads represented
will start competition at 12 pm and conclude action at about 6 pm.
Spartan wrestling coach Hugh Mumby stated that three matches would be in progress at the same time. All the matches
will be held in the Men's Gym.
Lettermen Warren King, Don Anderson, Chet Belknap, Carl Dommeyer, Art Beatty, and Jim Noon will be some of the
SJS wrestlers seeing action in the one day tournament.
There will be two divisions in the tournament, novice and varsity. Ten weight classes will also be offered for
the contestants. |
