 Spartans Topple Bulldogs

Making its first appearance of Fresno State College in dual meet competition, the San Jose State Spartans emerged 14-12 victors over the Bulldogs in a wrestling match held there Friday night.

Thanks to a pin by Art Beatty, the SJS team was able to leash the Bulldogs. Beatty pinned Fresno's Ron Waggoner at the 5:12 mark in the second period of their match.

The pin accounted for two extra points for the Spartans and turned out to be the margin of victory. It was the only pin in the entire competition.

Hugh Mumby, the Spartan wrestling coach, figured that the Fresno State match was going to be a close one. Just the weekend before, the Bulldogs had edged the San Jose State team by one point to take second place honors in the Spartans Invitational tournament.

Each team won four matches, but Beatty's pin made the difference. It was the second time that Beatty had defeated Waggoner this year. In the Invitational meet, Beatty had defeated Waggoner then, too.

Carl Dommeyer decisioned Larry Baker in the 147-pound division. Cliff Olson captured the 157-pound title and Don Anderson claimed the heavyweight crown for San Jose State.

Fresno State collected its points by Steve Johansen (123), Garth Spitler (130), Eric Christiansen (167), and Don Nelson (177).

San Jose State takes a long rest now and will not compete until Jan. 11 against Chico State at 3:00 pm in the Spartan Gym.
