Spartan wrestlers travel to Fresno State Friday hoping to topple a Bulldog team which shows solid strength throughout
its lineup.
Coach Hugh Mumby's grapplers will face their first rugged dual meet competition in the meet which is scheduled
for 8 pm.
In the Spartan wrestlers' only other dual meet this season, they easily trounced Nevada, 40-0.
Nine grapplers will make the trip to Fresno. According to Mumby, probable matmen for SJS will be Dennis Runyon
(123), Joe Silva (130), Ron Matheson (137), Loren Miller (145), Gary Scardina (152), Jim Bridger (160), Mike Herschfelt
(167), Paul Hatling (177), and Rich Popejoy (hwt).
Pacing Fresno's strong wrestling contingent are Northern California's Steve Johansen (123), Mike Galego (152),
and heavyweight Eric Christenson.
"Fresno is an extremely balanced squad," Mumby warned.
The Bulldogs ranked second in the Northern California Invitational held Dec. 4 in the Spartan Gym. SJS placed fifth
in the same meet. Fresno State also took second in last weekend's Mare Island Open Invitational.
Mumby's grapplers turned in outstanding showings at Mare Island to earn two seconds and a third. |
