SJS Grapplers Drop Match To Olympic Club

Experience paid off Tuesday night as the San Francisco Olympic Club defeated San Jose State's grapplers 21-10 in San Francisco.

The Spartans captured two matches and drew one in their first dual meet of the season.

Ron Ruscigno decisioned the Olympic Club's Jim Silvia in the 177-pound class and Spartan Paul Hodgins won by default over Sven Holm in the 191-pound match.

Leroy Stewart grappled to a draw with the Olympic Club's Ron Pineda in the 147-pound division.

Hodgins was leading 4-0 in his match when Holm strained a back muscle and was forced to quit.

Coach Hugh Mumby said that both Ruscigno and Hodgins looked "very good" for this early in the season.

Top performer for the Olympic Club, according to Mumby, was Joe Gomez who pinned Frank Paoni in the 130-pound class. Gomez was national greco-roman style champ last year.

Mumby said that this year's squad is "as good as last year's and maybe just a little bit better." He added that more experience was the difference.

The Spartan wrestlers don't compete again until Jan. 12 when they meet San Diego State at home.
