  Spartans Grapple Against Bulldogs

Tonight SJS makes its first wrestling appearance ever at Fresno State College in an 8 pm varsity meet.

The Fresno State Bulldogs have grappled against the Spartans in the San Jose State Invitational in the last three years but tonight will be the first dual meet competition between the two schools.

San Jose State was edged by one point by the Bulldogs last Saturday in the invitational tournament. However the University of California won the title.

Fresno State didn't organize a wrestling team until three years ago while the Spartans have been competing for some time.

San Jose State will be attempting to better its record of last year which was 6-7 when it wrestles Fresno State.

Coach Hugh Mumby will take four veteran Spartan wrestlers with him to Fresno. John Lim, Cliff Olson, Warren King, and Don Anderson are the seasoned men on the team.

All four Spartan wrestling veterans grappled in the invitational and will be facing man of the same Fresno State opponents.

Heavyweight Anderson and 167-pound King will be battling the same two Fresno State opponents that they faced last weekend. However, there is some doubt as to whether King will be able to wrestle tonight and Gary Scardina may take his place.

Fresno State's 177-pound champ Don Nelson will wrestle against Spartan sophomore Bill Harm and 157-pound tournament winner Joe Rossi of Fresno will face Olson.

In a 123-pound battle, sophomore Mike Stone of San Jose State will grapple Fresno's Craig Richards.

Anderson will be facing Jim Unti for the second time in a week. Unti was the runnerup to Anderson in the invitational heavyweight title match.

Either King or Scardina will wrestle against Johnny Oller. Rounding out the Spartan lineup will be Lim, Art Beatty, and Carl Dommeyer.

Mumby's freshman team won its first match of the season Wednesday night against Cabrillo College 14-11. The Spartan frosh had lost four other matches.

Dan Swenson, Mike Herschfelt, Loren Miller, and Don Gage were the SJS winners. A forfeited match by the Spartans made the score as close as it was.
