Wrestlers Take First In Nor Cal Mat Meet

A strong San Jose State wrestling team proved a rude host to the Northern California Intercollegiate Wrestling Tournament Saturday afternoon, as it copped the team title behind Bernie Slate and Leroy Stewart.

The Spartans, with 48 points, outlasted California, which finished second with 43. Tough Modesto JC was third with 41, SJCC 31, Fresno CC 25, College of Sequoia 17, Cal Aggies 16, Fresno State 14, San Francisco State 11, San Jose frosh 10, and College of San Mateo 7.

Stewart, grappling in the 147-pound class, advanced to the finals where he scored an important win by decision over Cal's Rick Machado.

Bernie Slate, Hugh Mumby's choice in the 191 division, scored one of the day's two pins in the finals, when he set down John McGrew of College of the Sequoias.

The other pin victory was scored by John Meecham of San Jose City College in the heavyweight match. He bounced Bill Elliot of Modesto JC.

Rob Lopez was ousted by decision in the finals of the 137-pound category by Don Kline of SJCC.

Mumby's grapplers were to meet San Francisco Olympic Club tomorrow night at 7:30 in the City, but a mixup in dates has called for a rescheduling of the match.
