  Spartan Wrestlers Win Dramatically

SJSU's Ralph Kuehn outlasted Marcus Lopez of Humboldt State in the final heavyweight match to provide the Spartans with a dramatic team victory in the Chico State Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.

The wrestlers trailed Humboldt nearly the entire competition but rallied behind five first place finishes to end up on top 80 and 3/4 points. Humboldt was second in the 10-team meet with 78 and Chico State came in third.

"We really came back well," said assistant coach Jim Ray. "We should be going places this year."

The unexpected win for the Spartans, who are 3-0 in dual meets, was climaxed by Kuehn's 6-3 heavyweight decision triumph and was keyed partly by an award-winning performance by Robert McDowell.

McDowell decisioned dave Adams of Southern Oregon 10-5 for the first place in his division and was named unanimously the Outstanding Wrestler of the tournament.

Other first place finishers for SJSU included Rusty Lockwood (118) who won his final match 8-6, Kevin Hejnal (158) by a final 4-3 margin, and Dave Brouhard (167) by a 12-6 count.

Duane Harris (190) wounded up in third place, and Randy Cook and Mike Hoody were fourth place finishers in the 126 and 134 classes, respectively.
