San Jose State repeated as champions in the 5th annual Northern California Intercollegiate wrestling tournament
Saturday in the Spartan Gym.
The Spartans bagged three titles and three third places in tallying 66 points to top second-place Fresno State's
53.
The SJS grapplers face their toughest test of the season when they journey to San Francisco for a match with the
Olympic Club at 7:00.
The Olympic Club squad includes several wrestlers who have represented the United States in the Olympics and in
world championships, according to Spartan coach Hugh Mumby.
Leroy Stewart successfully defended his 147-pound crown in the tournament for SJS, pinning John Easley of Modesto
Junior College.
Other titlist for the Spartans were Bob Lopez (137) and Cliff Olson (157). Ron Ruscigno (177), Paul Hodgins (191),
and George Hewitt (hwt) took third places for SJS.
Mumby said 117 wrestlers from 14 colleges and universities competed in 116 matches in the tourney. |
