| For the fourth year in a row, the SJS wrestling team outpointed all rivals and won the Northern California Intercollegiate
Wrestling Tournament here Saturday. |
| |
| The Spartans were not favored, but still compiled a sufficient point total to beat out Fresno State 72-68. The
Bulldogs were pre-tourney picks to take the meet over defending champions SJS. Coach Hugh Mumby's squad took the
team title last year when it also edged Fresno State. |
| |
| The Spartans captured three first places in varsity competition and frosh participants made fine showings, taking
two second place spots in the tough competition. |
| |
| Warren King (147), Paul Hodgins (191), and Don Anderson (hwt) each routed his opponent to take the crown. For Anderson
and Hodgins, it was the second year in a row they won their weights. |
| |
| Coach Hugh Mumby was impressed with the showings of Rich Lawhead and Jim Porter. Both freshmen, they both took
second places in the tourney. Law head wrestles in the 167-pound division and Porter in the heavyweight spot. |
| |
| Cliff Olsen placed second in the 157-pound division. John Lim (127) and Ismael rodriguez took third places. Carl
Dommeyer (137) and Jack Proctor (177) were fourth in their weights. |
| |
| Altogether there were 11 teams from seven colleges. Coach Mumby rates the tournament not quite as strong as last
year's but the four-year schools have added strength over the last season. There were a total of 69 entries. |
| |
| The frosh team travels to Diablo Valley College tomorrow for its last competition until it meets San Jose City
College Jan. 4. The varsity is idle until Jan. 11 when the Spartans duel Chico State. |
