| The youthful SJS wrestling team takes on the cream of collegiate West Coast wrestling tomorrow afternoon at the
Chico Invitational Wrestling Tournament. |
| |
| New coach Terry Kerr will take six Spartan grapplers to the tournament, billed as "one of the best on the
West Coast." |
| |
| With Cal Poly SLO and the University of Washington entered, a strict caliber of competition is assured for the
event. |
| |
| Last week, at the SJS hosted tournament, Cal Poly sent its second and third string teams and still dominated the
meet. |
| |
| Tomorrow, it sends the big boys. |
| |
| Washington, another collegiate powerhouse, has six returning lettermen who competed in the NCAA tournament finals
last year. |
| |
| The Spartans go into the Chico tournament following a 21-17 defeat by San Francisco State last Wednesday night
in the Spartan Gym. |
| |
| Although a 10 point deficit would indicate an easy win, it was not the case as SJSU and SFS were tied after the
177-pounders wrestled. |
| |
| A sweep of the remaining matches gave the Gators the victory, however. |
| |
| The Spartans had winners in three weights...Jim Lucas (142), Tim Kerr (167), and Dean Prescott (177). |
| |
| "Everyone that won looked pretty good," commented Kerr. "We also had a couple of guys who did well
like Steve Baca and Mike Cancilla." |
| |
| Baca, wrestling at 126, wrestled to a draw with his SFS opponent. "I was a little disappointed that he didn't
go for the win at the end," Kerr said, "but both wrestlers were so good, each was afraid to let it all
out." |
| |
| Mike Cancilla, wrestling at 150 pounds, lost an extremely close battle on points, 10-9, in the closest match of
the night. |
| |
| The younger Kerr beat Mike Likens of SFS, gaining a measure of revenge on the Gator Grapplers since Likens had
beaten Kerr at the SJS Invitational. |
