 Spartans Test Seven Rookies

If desire is 90 percent of winning, the SJS wrestling team can win tomorrow's 11th annual San Jose Invitational wrestling tournament in the Spartan Gym at noon. If it's not, forget it.

The 1967-68 team is composed of seven rookies. This is from a total of 10 wrestlers.

The Spartans, however, do have three things going for them by the names of L.Q. Starling, Loren Miller, and Jim Bridger. These three men figure to carry most of the weight of the Spartan attack, according to coach Mumby.

Starling, a 115-pounder, finished fourth in the tourney last year while Miller (152) wrestled to a first place finish in 1964 and third in 1965. Bridger (167) took third in his weight class in 1965 also.

In all, 15 schools will be represented including SJS. Mumby looks for last year's tourney champ Cal Poly SLO to be the favorite with Fresno State, California, and Stanford challenging with SJS.

In the early 60s, the Spartans had a neck-hold on this tournament, winning in 1961, 1962, and 1964, but slipping to fourth in 1965 and third last year.

Besides Starling, Miller, and Bridger, the Spartans will test newcomers Robert Bailey (130), Steve Volmer (137), and Ron Wright (145) . Rounding out the starting lineup for SJS will be Dave Allen (160), Ernie Farrell (177), Roger McClaughry (191) and Joe Aquino (hwt).

Cal Poly brings three grapplers into the tourney who won last year. There are Kent Wyatt (145), Tom Kline (191), and Jesse Flores (130).
