Matmen Open With Tourney
|
| |
Coach Hugh Mumby's 1960-61 version of the Spartan wrestling team opens the season Saturday with the Intercollegiate
Novice meet, which should give the first indication of the Spartans' potential for the forthcoming season.
Some 80 entries from Northern California junior colleges and four-year schools are anticipated for the noon meet.
After four weeks of extensive workouts, the San Jose mat mentor declared his squad was "just about in shape"
and he expects them to be fully ready by next weekend, when the varsity grapplers open the home season with Intercollegiate
Open Tournament Dec. 10.
Top prospects for the locals in the Novice meet Saturday are Paul Hodgins, a sturdy heavyweight in the 191-pound
class, and juniors Ed Fuller and Dave Johnson at 147.
Mumby also looks for sharp performances from Warren King (167) and Cliff Olson (157). Both are up from last year's
frosh mat team. |
