Wrestling Tomorrow

Two-time PCAA champion Eddie Baza stopped Wayne Jones 6-5 in the highlight match of the first Blue-Gold intersquad wrestling match Wednesday night at Spartan Gym.

The second Blue-Gold meet, which will determine the early season starting lineup for the Spartans, takes place at the same locale tomorrow night at 7:30.

"it was just a great match," SJSU head coach Kerr noted. "Baza's a little bigger and stronger, so it was tougher for Jones, but he's just a great athlete."

Baza, the league champion the past two seasons at 126 pounds, has moved up to 134 this season. Jones, who placed second in the league at 118, will be wrestling at 126 this season. Baza's career record is 53-18-2, while Jones' career mark is now 40-15.

The remainder of Wednesday's matches, which drew an estimated 400 fans, were to determine the pairings on tomorrow's card.

"The crowd was pretty good considering it was an intersquad meet," Kerr said.

"But we still need a lot of work on conditioning," Kerr noted. The matches on Wednesday were all six minutes in length.

"If they had been eight minutes (regulation collegiate length), some of the guys would have died," he said.

Tomorrow night's matches will be regulation eight minutes in length.

In one of tomorrow's more interesting pairings, heavyweights Jerry Morrison and Guy Heath will do battle for the starting slot.

"I wouldn't want to bet against either of them," Kerr said. "Heath has the size and the experience, but Jerry likes to win."

Morrison took the PCAA crown as a freshman last season. Heath, who red-shirted last year, was PCAA runnerup in 1978.
