Wrestlers Expecting Balanced Strength

Two veteran wrestlers and a new crop of junior college and freshman team additions should give the SJS grapplers balanced strength this season.

However, coach Hugh Mumby isn't looking for a place to hang any trophies yet.

"If we stay healthy, we should have fairly good strength, but we aren't very deep," explained the veteran wrestling prof.

After three weeks of workouts, Mumby's team is rounding into shape. Leading men are two-year lettermen Loren Miller and Mike Herschfelt. Miller was a question mark earlier this season with a tender knee, but he has definitely decided to compete. With the addition of the two-time performer in the NCAA meet, prospects are brightened tremendously.

Gary Lorenz, at 145 pounds, should also win his share of matches this year. Competing formerly at Foothill, he won Northern California junior college honors in his weight class.

Other lettermen that Mumby is counting on are Dave Austin, Dan Swenson, Joe Silva, Paul Hatling, and Rich Popejoy.

Sophomore L.Q. Starling and Chabot transfer Tom Seymour are the top contenders in the 123 pound class division.

With Austin in the 130 pound class are Larry Kubo, a frosh team veteran, and Steve Frank, a Chabot product.

Swenson and Arno Dominguez, another Chabot transfer, are fighting for the top spot at 137 pounds.

Lorenz and College of San Mateo transfer Bob Hearn battle at 145 pounds. Steve Vollmer will see action in either the 137 or 145 pound division.

Frosh vet Dave Allen, Silva, and Gary Ramstetter, a transfer from Trinity College in Colorado, are in line for the first position at 152 pounds.

Miller, last year's team captain, gives the Spartans strength in the 160 class. The senior was undefeated in dual matches last season.

Another of last year's top performers, Herschfelt, returns at 167 pounds. The Spartans are quite thin after him, however.

Hatling and Lou Encalada battle to start 177 while Roger McClaughry is alone in the 191 pound class.

Popejoy and newcomer Sandy Lighthall comprise the combatants at heavyweight.
