Spartans To Host Junior PAAU Tournament

The San Jose State College Spartans will play host to all Bay Area wrestling teams in the Junior PAAU tournament Saturday night in Spartan Pavilion. This is the first year San Jose has ever been awarded the tournament.

With approximately 15 Spartans entered in the meet, coach Sam Della Maggiore is starting the season off with a bang. Outstanding competitors form the Olympic Club, University of California, California Aggies, San Francisco State, and many YMCAs will be entered.

San Jose will be after its first championship in the event. Although winning two titles last year, the Spartans were nosed out by the strong Olympic Club for the team championship. The Winged-O squad will again rate the favored position, due to its strong showing last year.

San Jose's two winners last year, Karl Kuhl and George Yoshisato, will not be entered Saturday, as the tourney is open only to competitors who have never won a gold medal.

Outstanding entrants for the Spartans are Ivan Olsen at 135 pounds, and Freddie Albright in the featherweight division.

Admission will be free, and Della Maggiore expects a big crowd for the season's opener. Matches will start at 8:00.
