There is no question SJSU's wrestling team will have more important meets than the one they have 7:30 tonight in Spartan Gym.

But, in terms of pride, tonight's match with the alumni undoubtedly is the biggest.

Spartan assistant coach Kevin Hejnal, who completed his SJSU wrestling career last season, played a part in the 1977 varsity's 35-13 victory over the alumni.

Tonight, Hejnal will compete for the alumni against sophomore Reggie Thompson in the 167-pound match.

"There is definitely a lot of pride involved in this meet," Hejnal said. "Last year the varsity won for the first time and the alumni don't want that to happen again."

"The alumni, of course, are more experienced. but tend to lack conditioning. Varsity performers want to impress the coach."

"So there'll be some exciting matches."

The most exciting may be the 150-pound contest between senior Robert McDowell and SJSU assistant coach Tihamer Toth-Fejal.

Toth-Fejal, who wrestled collegiately at Lehigh University, is the lone import on the alumni squad. He was an All-American in 1977 and an alternate to the U.S. team at the 1978 World Games.

Three other Spartan assistants will be in action for the alumni.

Danny Kida takes on freshman Eddie Baza and Rudy Guevara battles senior Rusty Lockwood in 126-pound matchups.

Tim Kerr, brother of SJSU head coach T.J. Kerr, opposes senior Mike Snipes. Snipes (167) will face a 10-pound weight disadvantage.

Among the other six scheduled matches, senior Marty Lockwood challenges Rafael Meza at 118, sophomore Dennis McDowell meets Oscar Trevino at 134, senior Duane Harris tangles with Ralph Kuehn at 190, and junior Guy Heath squares off against Donnell Jackson in the heavyweight division.

Tickets will be on sale at 6:30. Admission is $2 for adults and $1 for students.

......

Robert McDowell and Lee Mills registered pins in leading the Blue to a 25-12 win over the Gold in the annual Blue-Gold intrasquad meet Wednesday night.

McDowell pinned freshman John Peregrina in the 150-pound contest. Mills put another freshman, David Perez, on his back in the second round of the 134-pound bout.

Marty Lockwood, Wayne Jones, Doug Steward, and Mike Snipes all won by decision for the Blue team.

Gold winners were Eddie Baza, Rick McKinney, Reggie Thompson, and Duane Harris.
