Wrestling Squad Meets Cal Poly In Initial Match

With five returning lettermen, the SJS wrestling squad hopes to get off on a winning note tomorrow night at 8:00 when it meets Cal Poly-SLO.

Four of the lettermen have clinched their respective weights, but the fifth still has to take his position definitely. Also weights 137, 167, and 177 have to be determined today.

Coach Hugh Mumby said that is team is "fairly strong, and we look forward to a winning year." He hopes two football players will add strength to the squad.

Last year's team finished with a record of seven wins, four losses and three men place in the top four places in PCI Wrestling Tournament. Paul Hodgins (hwt) copped the third place in the tourney. Cliff Olson (157) and Warren King (147) both took forth places.

Hodgins, Olson, King, John Lim, and Dave Armstrong are the five lettermen on this year's team.

Mumby expects two junior college transfers and two men up from the frosh team to help the varsity team. Two 147-pounders, Frank Strouse from SJCC and Dennis Kenney from Chaffey College are contesting this spot. Two sophomores at 137, Art Beatty and Carl Dommeyer will add strength to this weight class, Mumby said. Ismael Rodriguez will also help the team at 167 pounds, according to Mumby.
