An old wrestling rivalry will be renewed at 7:30 tonight in Spartan Gym when SJSU plays host to powerhouse Bakersfield State.

The Spartans, 1-0 after a 43-3 decision over Chico State last Thursday, will be making their home debut against a Division II team which finished sixth in the NCAA Division I championships last year. SJSU place ninth.

"It's a friendly competition," SJSU coach T.J. Kerr said. "We respect each other. It's kind of a bit meet for a lot of people. We get a chance to see what each other has."

Bakersfield State, the defending Division II champion, will be wrestling in its 1982-83 season debut. SJSU won last year's home meet 21-18, but lost 37-5 at Bakersfield.

"They know how big the meet is," Kerr said about the Spartans. "There's a lot of pressure. It's going to be a close meet."

Here are the tentative matchups in each weight class tonight. SJSU wrestlers listed first.

118: David Ciprian vs. Adam Cuestas (46-3 last year) or Tim Vanni, 105-pound world champion.
126: Brad Gustafson vs. Mel East.
134: Tim Porter (replacing an injured Albert Perez) vs. Brian Stevens or John Loomis.
142: David Barnes or John Middlestead vs. Mike Burch or Ray Hammond.
150: Jay Slivkoff or Randy Hood vs. Craig Noble or Jesse Reyes.
158: Pat Huyck vs. Woody Smith or Troy Osborne.
167: Michael Hairston vs. Scott Teuscher or Dennis Reed.
177: Marvin Jones or Chris Atkinson vs. Mark Loomis, a Division II champion.
190: Andy Tsarnas vs. Mike Blaske, a national junior college champ last year.
Hwt: Jerry Morrison vs. Roger Hairston.

In other wrestling news, the Spartans sent their freshmen squad to the Biola Invitational last Saturday and won four of five matches. SJSU wrestlers and their records are Dan Cota 3-2, Matt Ceglia 2-3, David Gruss 4-1, Bill Newton 4-1, Matt Toves 5-0, Darryl Pope 4-1, Don Knox 3-2, Chris Atkinson 3-2, Eric Middlestead 5-0, and Mike Monroe 5-0.

The SJSU freshmen also powered past Fullerton State 31-13 last Sunday. Winners were Cota, Newton, Knox, Atkinson, Middlestead, Monroe.

Kerr's reason for using his freshmen against other varsity schools: "We are a development program. This gives them a lot of wrestling time."
