Wrestlers Open Season Against Bears Tonight

Opening the 1954 wrestling season tonight, the Spartan varsity grapplers meet the University of California matmen
in the Spartan Gym at 8 o'clock.
The Spartans will be led by Dick Francis, Gus Talbot, George Lao, Ken Rugg, and Kyoshi Oshiba. The Bears' leading
wrestler is Wayne Loucks, 137-pound PCI champion last year.
Coach Hugh Mumby has three 137-pounders from whom to choose as opponent for the Cal ace. Leading 137-pounders are
Benny Fernandez, Gail Hevie, and Bob Rothwell. Ron Stingley, last season's letter winner in the 137-pound division,
will not be ready for tonight's encounter with the Berkeley squad.
Another letterman who will not be in tonight's match is Jerry Ruse (191). Ruse is currently playing football. |
