San Jose College's Spartan wrestling team wound up in third place in the annual Junior PAAU wrestling tourney Saturday
night in Spartan Pavilion with Dave Hines in the 158-pound division and Freddie Albright at 134 pounds winning
gold medals.
San Francisco YMCA captured the team title with 33 points, the Olympic Club was second with 25, and the combined
San Francisco varsity and freshman squad earned 24 points. University of California was fourth with 14, Berkeley
YMCA fifth with 3, and Oakland YMCA sixth with two points.
Coach Sam Della Maggiore's grapplers placed six medal winners. In addition to the two titleholders, Dave Kawamoto
and Bob Sakamoto in the 145 and 118 pound classes respectively, won second place medals. Glen Magnus, San Jose
freshman, who was pinned by Hines, won third place, and Charlie Smith captured third in the 191-pound class.
Hines was high point man for the Spartans with seven points. Albright, who scored six points, ended a strenuous
day capturing the lightweight title.
In the morning, Albright, who is captain of the soccer team, led the squad to a four to one triumph over Stanford,
made wight in the afternoon, and won the Junior PAAU title in the evening.
During the evening, spectators and competitors observed a moment of silence for the late coach Eugene Grattan,
who was killed in an automobile crash recently.
Next competition for the grapplers will be in the coming all-college novice tourney tomorrow evening in Spartan
Pavilion.
The event was originally scheduled for Friday night, but the shift was necessary because of conflict with the Fresno
State College football game. |
