Wrestling Team Faces Alumni

"This is going to be an awesome meet," wrestling coach T.J. Kerr said referring to the upcoming alumni meet tomorrow night at 7:30 in Spartan Gym.

"This will be our toughest meet," Kerr said. "I sure hope we don't run into anybody tougher."

The alumni will field a talent team from top to bottom. Most are helping coach at SJSU or have programs of their own.

"They're in good shape," Kerr said. "They have to be; it is a pretty demanding sport."

The alumni squad will look like this: Marty Lockwood (118) a Pan Am gold medalist and Olympic team alternative, Danny Kida (126) two-time NCAA All-American and Pan Am silver medalist, Rudy Guevara (134) PCAA champion, Mike Hoody (142) SJSU letterman, Tihamer Toth-Fejel (150) NCAA All-American and World Games alternative, Robert McDowell (158) one of SJSU's all time top wrestlers, Kevin Hejnal (167) PCAA champion, James Rey (177) PCAA champion, Duane Harris (190) two-time champion or Thor Jensen, Donnell Jackson (hwt) three-time PCAA champion or Ralph Kuehn NCAA Western Regional runner-up.

This is a high-key meet, according to Kerr, and the alumni take a lot of pride in this meet.

The Spartan wrestlers will qualify for the alumni meet by wrestling in the Blue-Gold meet tonight at 7:30 in Spartan Gym.

In this meet, the two final challengers in each division will wrestle for the starting slot the following night.

A couple of matches to keep an eye on, according to Kerr, will be the 177-pound division with Dave Brouhard and Billy Thomas, and the 126-pound division with Eddie Baza and Wayne Jones.

Brouhard and Baza are past PCAA champions, and Thomas, who will be redshirting this year, is the brother of SJSU football stars Jewerl and Ken Thomas.

"All the matches should be pretty good," Kerr said. "They haven't wrestled each other yet and they don't know each other."

Looking at the alumni meet, Kerr said, "I hope they (the alumni) don't dominate too much."

"This is no going to be a controlled scrimmage," Kerr added. "It's going to be an all-out war."

The Blue-Gold meet will be carried on Gill Cable on television. Season tickets for SJSU wrestling matches will be available at both matches.
