The third annual San Jose State all-college novice wrestling tournament will be held the second week of November,
announced coach Gene Grattan yesterday.
Only strictly novice wrestlers who have had no previous experience before this year will be eligible, Grattan declared.
Fundamental instructions will be given all this quarter by members of the varsity on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
afternoons.
Members of the varsity will enter teams and awards made on the basis of team championships. Individual honors in
the various divisions will also be awarded.
Any organization on campus may sponsor a team, Grattan declared, and a varsity man will be provided as coach. Beginners
interested should sign up with some experienced wrestler and start training immediately, Grattan emphasized.
Two Spartan wrestlers have already signified their intention of coaching teams. Con Lacy has entered a boxer's
squad composed largely of freshmen and varsity mittmen who are giving the mat sport a trial. Mel Bruno will also
enter a full team, although no organization has been secured to back the squad yet.
Bob Norona, who coached the championship squad for the past two years, will not enter a team as he is not in school
this quarter. Norona expects in time for the varsity season next quarter.
Additional experience for freshman and novice wrestlers this quarter is promised by Grattan, as the Spartans will
enter a team in the Junior PAAU tournament at the University of California in the first week of November. This
tournament is also closed to men who have won previous wrestling titles.
The regular varsity and freshman mat seasons will officially open next quarter, although the freshman lineup will
probably be decided upon performances in the Novice and Junior PAAU tournaments, stated Grattan. |
