 Wrestling Match To Feature Champs

Playing the opening fame of the season against a team comprised almost totally of former PCAA wrestling champions and a two-time All-American, isn't exactly a wrestling coach's dream, but SJSU coach Terry Kerr is looking forward to the confrontation.

No, Kerr isn't crazy, for it's not everyday one gets to play against an alumni team the calibre of the one his Spartans will meet Friday at 8 pm in the Spartan Gym.

"They are really going to present a good test for our guys, even though they won't necessarily be in the best of shape," Kerr said of the alumni team some members of which he even coached.

"Of course there will be a lot of pride at stake on the part of the alumni because i don't think they want to get beat by some younger guys."

The alumni will be led by former two-time All American Danny Kida, who will also be the captain for the team.

Joining Kida, who incidentally is a specialty coach for the lightweight division at SJSU, are some of last year's standout players who include Eddie Ortiz, Steve Dick, Dean Prescott, and Tom Roberts.

Ortiz was the PCAA champion in the 126 pound class last year, while Dean, Roberts, and Dick each received consolation victories in last year's championships.

Added to this list of former champions are Oscar Trevino (two-time PCAA champ), Greg Hill (another PCAA champ in the 142 pound division) and Jim Lucas who took second in the PCAAs in 1974.

Coaching the alumni contingent will be the father and son tandem of Ted and Hugh Mumby.

Together the two men are responsible for 30 years of coaching at SJSU.

Kerr said that his wrestlers are improving at a satisfactory rate and presently are involved in three minute match drills in preparation for the upcoming meets.

"Right now we're in the process of making up the seeding for a mini-tournament which will give me chance to see where some of the guys are at in terms of actual head to head competition."

"In these matches," he continued, "we will be going for the first time this season with eight minute sessions."

"Most of the guys came into season pretty well prepared for the hard work we've been doing, so we'll be in good shape for the alumni," Kerr added.

Leading the way for this year's Spartan matmen will be junior Rudy Guevara who won the PCAA crown at 118 as a sophomore a year ago.

Although only six of the twelve original freshmen still remain on SJSU's squad to this date, Randy Fleury, Phillip Williams, and Steve Mills should give the alumni a spirited run for its money and pride.
