SJS' wrestling squad gets a chance to test its PCAA strength this weekend when the Spartan grapplers engage in
their initial PCAA 1970 outing Saturday against San Diego State.
The local matmen will unlimber for the SDS meet with a non-league affair against Sacramento State. Both meets get
underway at 7:00 in the upstairs Men's Gym.
Optimistic coach Bill Smith looks forward to good showings on the part of his Spartans following their christmas
layoff. Smith rates San Diego as the third best PCAA contingent behind his own squad and Fresno State.
SJS took the PCAA crown in its initial season of competition last year with an 11-5-1 mark but a "much improved"
Fresno team will be tough to overhaul according to Smith. The Spartans will send four freshmen against their weekend
competition in quest of their first dual meet victory.
Harold Yee, filling in for the injured Art Stone (dislocated finger) will go in the 118-pound class. Other entrants
for SJS include: Tim Owens (126), Dave Smith (134), John Jacabo (142), Terry Kerr (150), Arno Dominguez (158),
Tim Kerr (167), Paul Hatling (177), Ray Mendola (190), and Cleve Holt (hwt).
Additionally, Tim Kerr will wrestle 158s against San Diego while Walt Thatcher vies as a 167 against the Aztecs.
The Spartans fell to San Francisco State, a Far Western Conference power 23-13 in a pre-holiday meet.
SJS victors included Yee (118), Terry Kerr (142), and Hatling (177). |
