 Wrestlers Win No. 1

Undefeated Loren Miller, Spartan senior wrestling in the 152-pound class, earned wins number 13 and 14 over the weekend to spark coach Hugh Mumby's grapplers to a split against San Diego State and UCLA.

Miller pinned Mike Nystul to give SJS it first win of the season, a 16-14 win over San Diego State Friday in Spartan Gym. Both teams picked up four wins and a draw, but the two points awarded to Miller for his pin gave SJS its margin of victory.

Miller decisioned Mohammed Sodrzodeh, 16-3 Saturday in Spartan Gym, but a powerful UCLA squad topped SJS 31-10. L.Q. Starling wrestled to a 4-4 draw with UCLA's Jesse Sandoval and Steve Vollmer won by forfeit for SJS' other points.

Bob Bailey (130) and John Wallbrink (145) earned their first dual meets of the season against San Diego State. Bailey downed John Baron 6-4 and Wallbrink defeated Mel Bonner 6-1.

Starling (123) gained his third dual meet win of the season with a 14-4 decision over John Thorsnes. Vollmer (137) drew San Diego's Larry Becht.

Miller, a participant in the 1966 NCAA wrestling tourney, is performing at his best according to Mumby. He missed last season due to knee injuries, but is fully recovered and has won most of his matches this season by either pins or large scores.

Starling is also having a good season, standing 3-0-1 in dual meets and 9-1-1 in overall competition.

Mumby's club travels to Chico State for a dual meet Friday and then will be idle until after the semester break.
