Sam Della Maggiore and John Jones will headline the all-college wrestling tournament in what will decide not only
the school champion but also the right to represent San Jose State College in all intercollegiate bouts when the
two meet tonight at 7:30 in Spartan Pavilion.
Della Maggiore and Jones are both new students, but experienced wresters, and for heavyweights, will give an exhibition
that will rival lightweights for speed.
Coach Gene Grattan presents Frank McGuire and Ralph Kelley in the 175-pound division and is expecting a real addition
to the wrestling team to emerge victorious from this bout.
Defending champion, Melvin Rush, will be matched with Ivan Nelson in the 165-pound class and to retain his title
he will have to reach his old form.
Martin Sword, 155 pounder, will have to present his full bag of tricks to take the decision from husky George Wenglein,
last year's veteran.
Tom Steven faces Carlton Lindgren in the 145-pound championship vacated by Martin Olavarri, who has dropped to
the 135 division. Steven is an unknown quantity, but will not meet a veteran in Lindgren, a clever beginner who
bids fair to reach heights not attained by Olavarri last year.
Vaughn Hubbard will tangle with Olavarri in the 135 weight class and will find himself with perhaps the most experienced
opponent he has met in his intercollegiate career. Olavarri will probably be in mid-season form and has found the
slight loss of weight has helped his speed.
Harold Wise will meet Jack Fiebig, who has more championships attached to his belt than any other collegiate grappler
in this sector. Wise was downed by Fiebig in the 125-pound division last year, but did a lot of wrestling throughout
the season and in this, his sophomore year and with more experience should make a fair bid to take the present
PAA champion.
Another champion, Henry Puckett (118), will meet Eldon Fischer in what will be the fastest match of the evening.
Puckett has held the Northern California YMCA championship and is a new member of the team. Fischer faces Puckett
in the first bout of the evening which will start at 7:30.
These team championships have been an annual tournament and will be followed by eight boxing bouts. |
