Francis Returns To Haunt Mumby

When Fresno State invades SJS tonight at 7:30, wrestling coach Hugh Mumby might find himself wishing that he hadn't taught his lessons quite so well.

Dick Francis, a former pupil of Mumby's while wrestling for the Spartans, is now coach at Fresno State and his club will be favored to hand SJS its first dual meet defeat of the season tonight.

In their only meeting this season, the Bulldogs captured second in the Northern California Invitational at SJS in December while the Spartans were one notch below.

However, Mumby hopes that a balanced team effort, paced by seven Spartans who have yet to be beaten in dual competition, will lead to a win in their toughest match of the season.

Francis has Fresno's strongest squad in the school's history this year. A member of the SJS Hall of Fame, Francis earned the Pacific Coast championship while wrestling at SJS between 1953-56.

"This will be one of the better teams that we will face this year," Mumby predicted. "It should be a real close contest."

Mumby plans to start L.Q. Starling (123), Dick Hamm (130), Dan Swensen (137), Gary Lorenz (145), either Joe Silva or Dave Allen (152), Gary Ramstetter (160), Mike Herschfelt (167), Paul Hatling (177), and Rich Popejoy (hwt).

Hamm, Swensen, Lorenz, Ramstetter, Herschfelt, Hatling, and Popejoy are still perfect in dual meets. But only Swensen, Ramstetter, and Popejoy can expect to continue that string on the basis of comparative results in the Invitational.

One of the better matches should be in the 145-pound battle between Lorenz and Fresno's Mike Checketts. Lorenz finished third in the tourney to his probable opponent's second, although they didn't meet in a head-on match.

Swensen decisioned his Fresno opponent in the tourney, Jim Norsworthy 3-1, and Ramstetter downed Fresno's Dennis DeLiddo 7-0 in another tourney match.

Other strong performers for the Bulldogs include Fred Contreras (123), Dave Adams (152), Mike Gallego (167), and Frank Kerby (177).

Mumby had his wrestlers working the second week on vacation and feels that they are in good shape for their first dual meet since December 6 when they blasted San Francisco State. Their other win was a shutout over the University of Nevada.

The freshman team will wrestle in the 5:30 pm preliminary.
