Grapplers In Form, Waltz Past 49ers

Not only winning, but winning big, has become almost a tradition for the 15th-ranked Spartan wrestlers.

And assistant coach Jeff Smith is out to show the nation they deserve not only their Top 20 ranking, but much more.

"We've got a good shot at finishing in the Top 10 with a victory over Cal Poly," Smith said after his squad's 53-0 thrashing of Long Beach State Thursday night.

The Spartans, after losing to 8th-ranked Cal Poly 20-19 Jan. 19, will go for revenge when they host the Mustangs Wednesday, Feb. 16.

After losing three big matches by two points or less, SJSU demolished the hapless 49ers, chalking up three falls in the process.

Freshman Danny Cota (118), Jay Slivkoff (150), and Jerry Morrison (hwt) won by falls, while Brad Gustafson (126) and Marvin Jones (177) won by forfeit.

Freshman Darryl Pope (158), ahead of his overwhelmed 49er opponent 13-0, won when his foe decided to forfeit the match.

John Middlestead (134) scored the biggest victory of the match with a 24-4 decision.

David Barnes (142), Michael Hairston (167), and Andy Tsarnas (190) also won decisively.
