The wrestling team will have its strongest lineup of the season on the mat Saturday night. Assistant coach Tim
Kerr announced the return of two starters in the 6 pm contest to be held in the Spartan Gym. Sacramento State is
the opposition.
Eddie Ortiz has become eligible for athletics after being ineligible last semester and Marcus Schuff has come off
of the injury list.
Although Kerr still feels the team is weak at upper weights, with four seniors in the lineup, the team is more
experienced.
The team's overall record is 6-11 which Kerr attributes to injuries and lack of depth.
Injured are Guy Duster, Mike Gaynor, Rafael Meza, Tom Roberts, and Mitch Steinhauer. Joe Halbleib is wrestling
with a broken nose.
Lack of depth is shown by a recent meet in which SJSU forfeited two matches and another meet in which five of the
ten wrestlers were freshmen. In a meet with Cal, football star Dave Wasick volunteered to fill a vacant spot. He
lost.
To make things worse, Kerr says they have been "hot and cold" this season. The team has beaten Humboldt,
a Far Western Conference powerhouse, but has lost to weaker teams.
The lineup for the Saturday match is: Rudy Guevara (118), Eddie Ortiz (126), Greg Hill (134), Steve Dick (142),
Mike Snipes or Pat Tillman (150), Jim Niskanan (158), Dean Prescott (167), Marcus Shuff (177), Mario Rodriguez
(190), and Mike Raushnot or Steve Cuffaro (hwt).
Two outstanding freshmen on the team are Snipes and Cuffaro. But they will have to fight for starting spots in
practice this week. |
