Six schools will participate in the two-night dual meet wrestling jamboree in the Spartan Gym Saturday and Monday
nights, but the probable center of attraction will be the meeting between San Jose and Washington State. The Cougars
won the 1950 Coast title and were 1951 co-champions with the University of California..
Ted Mumby, Spartan wrestling coach, says that the team from from the Palouse country lost most of tis outstanding
men from last year, but they have enough holdover talent to present another powerful squad.
Outstanding Cougar matman probably is Jim Dolle, PCI semi-finalist in the 137 pound class last year. Dolle lost
to Caroll Middleston of San Diego State by 9-8. Mumby expects to send Johnny Jackson against the WSC star.
Bill Tomaras, Cougar coach, is bringing a full ten-man squad which will participate both days.
Compromising the WSC squad are Jerry Holt (115), Glen Anderson (123), Irv Dahlberg (130), DeLance Duncan (147),
Ray Needham (157), Del McGhee (167), Bob Crabb (177), Joe Hoyt (191), Del Mosier (hwt), and Dolle.
Washington State will not be the only standout team in action, however. Stanford showed surprising strength against
the Spartans Friday night, The locals edged the Indians, 22-15.
Cal Poly, usually strong in wrestling, has been slow starting this season. They will perform Saturday but must
return for classes at San Luis Obispo Monday. The Spartan jayvees will replace Cal Poly for the Monday matches.
The two individual standouts scheduled to make an appearance are Webber Lawson, 1950 Far Western and PCI 115 pound
champion from Cal Poly, and Frank Waxham, San Jose State's 1950 and 1951 PCI 157 pound titlist. |
