In a move unprecedented in collegiate wrestling, San Jose State will play host to five wrestling teams in a mat
jamboree Saturday and Monday nights. Action will get under way at 7:00 on both nights.
Coach Ted Mumby's strong mat squad will meet Washington State, Stanford, Santa Clara, San Francisco State, and
Cal Poly in dual meets. The Cal Poly grapplers will compete only on Saturday night. The Spartan jayvee wrestlers
will fill in for the Mustangs on Monday.
Former San Jose State wrestler Mel Rush will be honored Saturday night for his work in mat programs at Hayward
and San Lorenzo high schools. In 1938 Rush captured the coveted Roumasset award for scholarship, character, and
leadership while competing here.
The products of Rush's tutoring ability are visibly seen on the Spartan squad this year as Spartan grapplers Joe
Thornley, Johnny Melendez, Joe Tiago, and PCI champion Frank Waxham were all coached by Rush at Hayward High.
According to Mumby, the meet will be staged on a dual meet basis in order to give every wrestler an equal opportunity
in match competition. Mumby further commented that in ordinary elimination tournaments the wrestler has but one
or two matches, but in the Mumby plan for Saturdays extravaganza, all contestants will see action in no less than
five matches. |
