Varsity Whips Stanford, 22-15

Not to be outdone by their varsity boxing brothers, Coach Ted Mumby's Spartan wrestlers pinned Stanford's varsity mat team, 22-15, Friday night in Palo Alto.

Stanford's jayvees measured the Spartan jayvees 10-8 in the preliminary action.

The varsity won two bouts by forfeit in the 123 and 130 pound divisions, while forfeiting the 157 pound bout to the Indians.

In the 137 pound event, Indian George Russell upset Spartan John Jackson with a fall in the last period. John Melendez gave the Mumbymen five points when he decisioned Bob Jessen in the 147 pound class.

Standout Frank Waxham, Mumby's top matman, decisioned Bruce Bailey in the feature 167 pound match. Stanford's Pat Madden decisioned Jim Van Houten in their close 177 pound scrap.

Heavyweight Jean Snyder and Phil Wilson of the Indians wrestled to a draw.

The jayvee battle consisted of four matches. Jim Eliot got five points by pinning Al Colton in ten seconds of the 177 pound clash. Trackman Boyd Porch took a close verdict over Indian 167-pounder Bob Beatty.

Stanford's points came via Ted Zutty's decision over Bill Eckert in the 157 pound division and Norm Manoogian's fall over hefty Hal Bristow in the 191 bracket.

Manoogian is the same Manoogian of the Stanford Rose Bowl team. Bristow formerly played tackle for San Jose State, and he had quite a tussle with the Indian guard.
